We talk to the husband-and-wife owners of the new Muffin Break at The village, Galvin Gunawan and Yulita Salim.

What’s something we might not know about Muffin Break?
We offer food designed specifically for more health-conscious people, from gluten-free and dairy-free options to low-fat and Weight Watchers–endorsed muffins. In our Weight Watchers muffins we use a special muffin mix – with fruit-based ingredients and no oil.

Why is your food so tasty?
We bake all of our muffins in store daily. Our bakers are up bright and early to start baking at 4.30am most days to make sure our customers have fresh muffins. We have three bakers and we also make all of our own wraps, toasties and croissants every day. If there’s one muffin to order it’s our choc chip muffin – all our customers love it.

Why should we stop for a coffee at Muffin Break?
We recently won a Gold Medal for Overall Franchise/Chain Champion in the 2014 Golden Bean Awards. All our baristas are specially trained and there’s no extra charge for soy or lactose-free milk! Also, if you register online to join our loyalty club, you’ll receive a free coffee immediately and one free muffin during your birthday month. Being a part of the club also means you’ll receive every fifth coffee free.

When baking at home, what’s your specialty?
Chocolate brownies, green tea macarons and chocolate macarons.

Tell us about Muffin Break’s first kids’ cookie-making workshop, which attracted more than 200 littlies.
We ran our first cookie-making class, for children under 10 years, during the summer school holidays and it was a huge success. It ran from Monday to Friday and on one day we had at least 80 kids in the class! Parents brought their children along and we gave each child some baking paper and cookie dough to get creative with the decorations. We then baked the cookies so the kids could enjoy them. We hope to hold some more workshops, and are now looking at muffin-making classes, too.”
